LESSON OBJECTIVES:

choice on meaning and tone.

[c] Cite evidence to support a
comparative analysis of texts.
CONTEXT: In this sub-unit you
will read a selection from the play The
Raisin in the Sun by Lorraine Hansberry.
This lesson continues our
sophomore studies by focusing on tone (the author’s attitude towards a work), topic
(an issue of importance to all humans), theme (the author’s message about a
story topic), denotation (the literal, dictionary definition of a word), and
connotation (extra meanings that a word picks up), all of which we have discussed
before in our class.
The content aligns nicely with our
world literature focus, which is play about African Americans struggling to
live on the south side of Chicago. The title of the play comes from a poem by
Langston Hughes called “A Dream Deferred,” sometimes called “Harlem”:
What happens to a dream
deferred?
Does it dry up
like a raisin in the sun?
Or fester like a sore—
And then run?
Does it stink like rotten meat?
Or crust and sugar over—
like a syrupy sweet?
Maybe it just sags
like a heavy load.
Or does it explode?
